Is the Chinese calendar a lunar calendar?
It is commonly called a lunar calendar, but it is more precisely lunisolar: months follow the Moon while the calendar also stays aligned with the solar year. A leap month is sometimes added. As a result, the same lunar festival falls on different Gregorian dates from year to year.
An Indonesian perspective
Kalender Tionghoa started as an Indonesian-language calendar website. In Indonesia, Chinese New Year is often called Imlek, the Lantern Festival Cap Go Meh, and Qingming Cheng Beng or Ceng Beng. Our English guides connect these names so you can recognize them when reading family or community announcements.
