When is Dragon Boat Festival 2027?

Dragon Boat Festival falls on Wednesday, 9 June 2027. Its Chinese calendar rule is the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. The festival is also called Duanwu; in Hong Kong, you may see the name Tuen Ng. These names refer to the same festival date.

Why does the Gregorian date change?

The Chinese calendar is lunisolar. Its months do not start on the same Gregorian dates every year, and a leap month is added in some years to maintain seasonal alignment. “Double fifth” means lunar month five, day five, rather than 5 May in the Gregorian calendar.

Dragon boats and zongzi

Dragon boat races and wrapped glutinous rice dumplings, known as zongzi, are widely associated with the festival. The Hong Kong Tourism Board describes both as festival traditions. Recipes and fillings vary, so the food you encounter in one community may differ from another’s version.

Festival day versus race day

A race advertised as a Dragon Boat Festival event may be held on a nearby weekend or across several days. The traditional date is not a universal race timetable. Check the organizer’s published schedule for the location you plan to visit, including whether viewing areas require tickets.

How to plan around the date

Use 9 June as your calendar reference, then separately confirm the race venue and start time. For an outdoor event, check the local weather forecast and transport arrangements shortly before travelling. If bringing food to a gathering, ask the host about preferences rather than assuming all dumplings use the same ingredients.

Is Dragon Boat Festival a public holiday?

That depends on the jurisdiction. Festival dates, statutory holidays and substituted days off are different kinds of information. This guide gives the traditional festival date; consult an official government holiday calendar for workplace or travel planning.

Sources and date conventions
