Qingming Festival 2027: Date & Tomb Sweeping Guide

Qingming Festival 2027 falls on Monday, 5 April 2027. Also called Tomb Sweeping Day, it is associated with remembering ancestors and caring for family graves.

Why is Qingming in April rather than on a fixed lunar day?

Qingming is linked to one of the traditional twenty-four solar terms. Its timing follows the Sun’s seasonal cycle, unlike festivals defined by a fixed lunar month and day. That is why looking for the same lunar date every year will not reliably find Qingming.

In 2027, 5 April corresponds to lunar month 2, day 29 in the Chinese calendar. That lunar date is a correspondence for this year, not the rule used to set the festival.

What do families do on Tomb Sweeping Day?

Families may visit ancestral graves, remove weeds, clean the site and remember relatives who have died. Some bring flowers, food or other offerings according to their own traditions. Religious practices and local cemetery rules vary, so there is no single checklist that applies to every family.

Cheng Beng and Ceng Beng in Indonesia

Indonesian Chinese communities often refer to Qingming as Cheng Beng or Ceng Beng. These names appear in family messages, cemetery notices and community schedules. They refer to the same broad tradition, although a family’s visiting date may differ from the festival date.

Must a family visit on 5 April?

Families sometimes arrange a visit on a nearby day for practical or customary reasons. Confirm the preferred timing with your family and check cemetery access, parking and opening hours. An organized ceremony can also have its own schedule.

A practical visit checklist

• Agree on a meeting time and confirm the cemetery location.
• Check whether cleaning tools, flowers or offerings are needed.
• Prepare for the weather and make arrangements for older relatives.
• Follow the site’s rules on incense, burning, waste and photography.
• Leave the area clean and respect neighboring graves.
